This is how we started out.....
A whole lot of dirt and a whole lot of helping hands. So, we planted......
and painted.....
and a good thing started to grow......
As a family project we made stepping stones. The kids really enjoyed planting a bit of themselves in our garden.
We are growing a Sunflower Hut, that will be a peaceful place for reading and writing....

We have had so much family participation! It has been fabulous! Here is a raised bed that Andy one of our Dads made and Cajia his wife burnt all the names of the students and teachers into the wood. What a fantastic gift for our garden. Even though it is summer and school is locked up tight... families have been coming to the garden to water, weed and enjoy. This little project has really taken on a life of it's own and I couldn't be happier. Even when I am out there and the temp is in the high 90's, all I have to think about are the squeals of delight that burst forth from the children as they spy a new vegetable growing.
Like our baby watermelon here.... as it grows and grows..... the looks on their faces! How satisfying!
Just like these rocks that I got into place this weekend. Another fabulous community donation. Thanks Stone Plus for helping us out! I should also thank my 2 little helpers Hannah and her brother Nathaniel... 'little man' to us, who came by the garden.. they just couldn't help themselves.. they had to dig right in! That's what I find so satisfying. In this area I have 2 green turtle boxes that I have re-purposed into what will become herb gardens. So we will have the great texture of the rocks and water, then the fabulous smells of the delicious herbs that will grow here! Oooo la la, who knew a bunch or rocks could make me so happy?
Even puts a smile on his face! Here are some tic-tac-toe boards that I am just tickled about. I can't wait until school starts to see the kids interact with these. I saw the layout in a Family Fun magazine and I have made it into a whole outdoor learning center. The children will be responsible for maintaining their boards by using scissors to cut the grass as it grows. They can also choose to create their own rock markers to play with. I can't wait to see where this takes us!
Well, this is running on a bit, but there was so much to catch up on. I'll finish here with an overall shot of the rest of our playground. Stay tuned as this space evolves into a fabulous outdoor classroom!
